“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (Joh 3:16).

John is clear that God loves the whole world, that is, every person. It doesn’t matter where in the world we were born or live, our cultural heritage, class status in world hierarchy, financial solvency or level of integrity. In fact, God’s love is not determined by any human biased classifications. He loves the world, all the humans that He created. Where is this love today? The world is in turmoil and in need of help. How much love can people find in God’s church? As disciples of Christ Jesus, we are commanded to imitate Him, follow His example of sharing the love of God the Father. How well are you doing, and how well am I doing?

As the church, it is our duty to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ, to take it to the whole world, to neighbours near and far, and yes, this includes our enemies. Matthew 5:44 informs us thus, “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” ( also see Luke 6:28). Peter tells us to “Use hospitality one to another without grudging” (1 pet 4:9). The Love of Christ in us enables us to portray Christ, who gave His life for our sins. And more, we have help to show the love of Christ through the person of the Holy Spirit who keeps us in check, if we are obedient.

Brethren and friends, let us love the Lord our God with all our hearts, souls and minds, and strength (Deu 6:5, Mar 12:30, ) Let us love one another as Christ first loved us. And let us love our neighbours, (near and far) as ourselves, through thoughts and deeds (Mar 12:31), by faith in Christ Jesus who lives in us.

I pray, in the name of Jesus, that we the church, a holy people, would live the love of Christ for the redemption of the world. And may the love of Christ dwell in you richly as you demonstrate the Word of love with all your being. In Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
